The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the most traditional of the models of the German brand. It is located in the heart of the range as a sedan of the large segment, where it seeks the balance between luxury (can be driven by a driver) and functionality (in many countries, that driver is called “taxi driver” ). But being traditional does not mean living anchored in the past. Thus, the luxury car that is also used as a taxi has just received a restyling and a change in the engine strategy in Argentina. Class E generation W212 arrived in Argentina in July 2009 ,Autoblog handled an E 250 City version last year ( read review ) and this restyling premiered at the Salón de Buenos Aires ( see note ). The values ​​start from $ 97,900 (306 hp). Compete against the Audi A6 (from 204 hp and 81,620 dollars), the BMW 5 Series (from 258 hp and 86,900 dollars) and the Jaguar XF (from 230 hp and 99,500 dollars). The main novelties of this facelift are seen in the trunk. With respect to the E-Class that was sold until last year, the four rectangular front independent optics were replaced by two integrated sets, with a more fluid design and LED daytime running lights. Since 1995, Mercedes-Benz was not making such an important change in the classic face of quad-lights of the E-Class. There are also new features on the front grill. In Europe, you can choose between a classic grill, with the Star emblem protruding above the bonnet or with the Star integrated on the grill. In Argentina only this second option will be offered, which also breaks with decades of tradition. On the side, we find 18- inch wheels of new design. They have five rays and in the center they are painted black. This is a very fashionable trend in Europe, but it does not stop convincing in Argentina: here it is associated with this decoration with a certain tuning of little good taste. Back, the optics were also modified, with a new set of LEDs. The rear mudguards received a more harmonious design. The measures were hardly modified. It is 4.88 meters long (two centimeters more than before) and a wheelbase of 2,874 millimeters (unchanged).


In the interior, the novelties are also punctual and concrete. All aesthetics are close to that of the most exclusive CLS , with which it shares a platform ( read review ). This includes the analog clock in the center console. In addition, it has the same board with a 4.5-inch color screen and a three-spoke steering wheel. The equipment includes the sliding roof, keyless access, the Parktronic automatic parking system, the three-zone climate control system, the leather upholstery and the multimedia system with a diagonal 17.8 cm screen. There is included the satellite navigator and the functions of the Harman Kardon Logic7 audio equipment . The trunk is automatic opening and closing. It is not very high, but it is very deep, with a capacity of 520 liters. Under the load floor is the spare wheel. It is for temporary use. There is no news here either. Follow with nine airbags (two front, two front side, two rear side, two curtain and one for the driver’s knees), ABS brakes with emergency brake booster (BAS), stability control, traction control, loss warning tire pressure and active head restraints. In addition, it has the Pre-Safe system (which preloads all passive safety devices when detecting a possible impact) and the Attention Assist (which lights a cup of coffee on the board when symptoms of fatigue are detected). As a reference, an E 220 CDiAvantgarde was subjected to the EuroNCAP crash tests in 2010 and obtained the maximum score of five stars, with 86% protection for adults, 77% for children and 59% for pedestrians.

Engine and transmission

If until now the novelties were almost anecdotal, this is where the main change of this new E-Class lies. Let’s recap. When the E-Class W212 arrived in Argentina in 2009, it did it with three engines (not counting the AMG): V6 3.0 of 231 hp, V8 5.5 of 388 hp and V6 3.5 of 292 hp. Later it was added a four-cylinder 1.8-liter turbo with 204 horsepower. But, when the Argentine Government imposed Non-Automatic Licenses for imported high-capacity vehicles, Mercedes-Benz Argentina amputated the E-Class offer and stayed with only the four-cylinder engine (the E 250 tested by Autoblog last year ). . It was a downsizing , but by force and by government decision But now, when the government lifted that restriction for big-engine cars, Mercedes took the reverse decision. With the arrival of this restyling, it annulled the four-cylinder version and offered only the V6 3.5 of 306 horses, both in the Sedan version and in the Coupé . It is the same mechanics that also carries the new CLS ( read review ). It reaches the maximum power regime at 6,500 rpm and delivers 370 Nm of torque between 3,500 and 5,250 rpm. This engine is combined with a seven-speed automatic transmission (7G-Tronic Plus) and rear-wheel drive. The only complement in the range comes from the side of the E 63 AMG , with a brutal V8 biturbo of 5.5 liters and 557 hp (yes, it costs 212 thousand dollars). The bad news is that Mercedes-Benz Argentina still does not mind the turbodiesel variants, a class E classic, whose commercialization for our market ceased more than four years ago.


It is not necessary to be an expert to realize that the change of motorization is noticeable – and much – at the wheel. It’s not just that before I had 204 hp and now 306. It’s not just that before I had 300 Nm and now 370. The great difference is also a philosophical issue. We are talking about a car that previously had a turbo and that is now normally aspirated. The Americans, eternal defenders of the cars of great displacement, well they say that “there’s no replacement for displacement” . And that is appreciated at every moment of the day. The power delivery of the engine is more linear from low turns, but becomes decidedly blunt the higher the speed is. The sound that comes from below the bonnet accompanies with coherence, in an intense way that can not be imitated or by the escape with the best work of acoustics. This is also noted in the benefits. While the E 250 accelerated from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.9 seconds and reached 239 km / h maximum, the new E 350 reaches 100 in 6.5 seconds and continues to accelerate until the limiter intervenes at 250 km / h . The chassis does not have any inconvenience to assimilate this change. In fact, I was already prepared for it since 2009. The E-Class is a large sedan, but it deftly assumes all kinds of challenges: from the transit of the city to a highway. From a twisty road to a rural road, dirt or poceado. His magic is all terrain. It responds in all kinds of conditions and with its own version of the Mercedes-Benz Firewall , which I already explained during the CLS review ( read more ). The difference is also noted in the consumption. Although, in this case – and as expected – the change is a bit for the worse. The average consumption climbed from 7.2 to 7.8 liters per hundred kilometers. Nothing serious. Especially when the capacity of the fuel tank was enlarged from 59 to 80 liters . What is remarkable is the jump in price: we went from the 76,900 dollars of the E 250 City to the 97,900 dollars of the E 350 Sedan.
